Book Review

Hello!

At the English course we had to read a chapter or two from the book. I read chapter 2 How we really use the web from the book Don’t make me think, revisited: A Common Sense Approach to Web and Mobile Usability by Steve Krug. I chose the book because when I looked for the book, what I want to read, I saw that the book had also some pictures and the text was not very formal. After reading I felt that I really understood the text and Krug has a point. In the chapter Krug tells how we use the web, why we use on that way and how web sites creators’ perception of user behavior differs from reality.

The chapter goes deeper about using web telling three most common way to use web. Partly I agree with Krug because those two ways are also same how I use the web. Usually, I scan the web sites and choose the first reasonable option. But the third way to use web is not same way how I use, because usually I read the introductions and other info to how to use the web unlike Krug tell.

Well I did not learn new information from the chapter but I got an important reminder. When we are doing our group project we should remember how differently the users of app think. Because usually users do not read everything, we should think and analyze precisely the place of the text and other important notes on the sites of app so that users notice them.

I think that someday I will read the book to the end because it seems very interesting and funny. I recommend the book anyone who is interested in web and mobile usability, and remember the text is not very formal.

Have a nice reading!

  1. Hi Niina! The book you read sounds interesting. I think you had a very important point about how differently users can think and we should definitely think about that when we develop our app.

  2. Hello Niina! Really important things there in that chapter. I also like that it is not written in too formal language. There are as many different kinds of users as there are users in general.

  3. Good post. It is indeed important to think about usability when developing a website or an app.

  4. Niina,

your point about users thinking in different ways was well thought out. I can relate to the claim that users don’t always read through pages carefully but rather just skim through them. Sometime you just don’t want to waste any time or don’t have the patience to read instructions or try to search for the information for a long time. I’m glad this reminded you of something important that you can mind while doing your group project.

  5. Hi! I also read a chapter from that book, it was about usability testing. The book seemed to be very interesting and I thought that I could read it entirely some day. I might read it in Finnish, so it’s little bit easier to understand everything.
